By
car:
With
the luxury of time, driving down to Greece can be a very pleasant
experience. Amongst the mass of hire cars and local vehicles you
will occasionally spot the odd British, German or Italian car.
The
most sensible route is through Italy and across the Adriatic via
ferry. Avoiding the former Yugoslavia involves a long detour through
Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria (crossing borders in this region can
be extremely problematic) and is not recommended.
From
the UK, the easiest route is Calais-Dijon-Geneva-Milan-Trieste.
This leg of the journey can be covered in two to three days. You
can then relax on the final part of the journey which is ferry to
Patras on the Peloponnese. Upon arrival, you will have to drive
to the port of Killini and then the ferry to Zakynthos which takes
about an hour. The driving distance from Athens to Zakynthos via
Killini and Patra is 292km (180 miles).
You can also take the hi-speed catamaran from Ancona in eastern
Italy during the summer months.
